Frank Ocean’s Nostalgia, Ultra Album (Audio)

In Music on May 14, 2011 at 5:06 pm

If it seems like too much Odd Future in one place or whatever, we understand, but also know that this is different. It is a straight up R&B album, and while there are a couple uneven moments, the highs (“Swim Good,” “Song For Women,” “We All Try,” “Dust”) are really high. If you want to further the Tyler/Odd Future/Neptunes comparisons (we won’t blame you if you don’t), Frank Ocean would probably be the crew’s less open- hearted Kenna—a more cynical, but still simultaneously wide-eyed version.

Amanda Diva “Madame Monochrome” [FreEP]

In Music on April 30, 2011 at 11:45 pm

After nearly two years away from music my fam Amanda Diva is back with a brand new project. DdotOmen and SoulCulture present: Madame Monochrome, a 10 track FreEp from Deevs. I was definitely feelin’ her collab withSki Beatz“ManChild,” you can also look forward to hearing production from BlacSoap, Droop-E, Cook Classics, James Poyser, and more. “Though she was busy with other projects, it was her frustration with America’s obsession with image over artistry and money over musicality that made her decide to put music to the side.  But a recent trip to Europe to perform in Berlin and Paris showed her that there is still a world that appreciates true artistry!  Renewed, she came back to the states, got back on the mic, and found her way to Madame Monochrome.” Check after the jump to hear what Deevs been cookin’ up over the last few years.

Jill Scott “Shame” featuring Eve (Video)

In Music on April 23, 2011 at 2:53 pm

It’s coming, it’s coming, it’s coming…it’s here! Jill Scott has unveiled the much-buzzed video for “Shame” and it is everything that the various leaks and behind-the-scenes snippets promised, from a Black Thought freestyle intro to the Special Ed shout-out on the fadeout. Eve killing her verse in jingling baby earrings, this we expected. Likewise, the starring role accorded the gymnasium of the Cecil B. Moore rec center in North Philly, where Ms. Scott basically grew up, ram-packed with a who’s who of illadelphians. The levitating horn players, though, was a nice surprise.

In Music on April 23, 2011 at 2:15 pm

Finally the LRG-sponsored 9th Wonder documentary project The Wonder Year fully-edited, officially official trailer is here. The individual bits are in a sense meatier, since you get more of the actual conversations with AlchemistDrakePhonte and others. But this clearly gives you a much broader feel for the movie’s reach and–as trailers are supposed to–it’s just gets you more amped. Ready to make history?
